At the beginning of the previous century, our ancestors lived in the village of Old Sinies at the bottom of Pantokrator Mountain. They built their houses here to avoid the pirates who were invading and pillaging the seaside villages.
Their families owned buildings near the sea, which were used for housing their workers and for storing the olives. The heritage was divided between the younger generations.
Nikolaos Katsaros, Georgotzis (nick name), the grand father of the family had in his property 600 olive trees and an olive press, where the family was producing olive oil for sale. His family owned a mini market – cafe (kafeneion) in Gimari village, as the production of the olive oil was not a satisfactory income during the period of the hard village life. The olive trees cropped every couple of years and the locals were living off farming and stock raising. The only son of the Georgotzis family (as the rest of the members are daughters), Dimitris Katsaros, started his own family when he married Frosso Mavrona.
At the beginning of their married life, Dimitris was working as a seaman. Frosso was dedicated to the raising of their children, Nikos and George, as well as working at the kafeneion. After a few years, Dimitris decided to renovate the small building on Kalami Beach, which had been passed to his hands by the patrimonial heritage.
Dimitris and Frosso started the business as a snack bar. In 1980, Kalami was thinly populated with just a very small number of houses, amongst them the famous White House. Kalami Beach snack bar was opened from the morning until the afternoon, serving soft drinks and snacks to the passing tourists coming from Kassiopi and other resorts in Corfu.
The next four years, a few more houses were built to accommodate the increasing visitors to Kalami. The development of the area had already started. In 1984, the Kalami Beach became a taverna offering Greek and Corfiot traditional homemade food cooked by Frosso. Nikos, the oldest son joined the business after finishing school.
In 1984, the family started to build the first complex of apartments, the Frosso apartments and in 1991 the building of Dimitris apartments were completed as well. Since then, Dimitris and Frosso apartments have offered a high standard of accommodation. Kalami soon became a popular resort for relaxing summer holidays, yet ke[t its traditional character and natural beauty.
Today, the family is still running the taverna and each member contributes for its successful operation:
Dimitris works in his garden to provide the fresh fruit and vegetables for the taverna. You may see him in his small boat, whilst fishing with nets for white bait and sardines.
Frosso is still at the heart of the kitchen. For 30 years she has offered the most delicious dishes prepared with the knowledge and the love of typical Greek traditional cooking.
Nikos continues to successfully run the family taverna and upholds the family values of offering the widest choice of excellent home-cooked food at reasonable prices.
George is a skilled fisherman, who contributes by supplying fresh fish to the taverna every day.
